Buyer takeaway: A Chinese brand entering your country is worth watching. It is not, by itself, proof that a vehicle bought in China can be imported, registered or covered by a local manufacturer’s warranty.
What Geely announced
Geely Auto announced its Canadian entry on 9 October 2026, with its first vehicles planned for 2027. A Canadian team is in place, and retail and service operations are being developed. Details of models, pricing and availability are still to come. Source: Geely Auto’s official announcement.
What this means for an overseas buyer
MUYAN AUTO’s interpretation: This is a reason to compare purchase routes, not to assume that every version of the same brand offers the same ownership experience. Compare the official local offer with any export quotation for the exact vehicle you are considering.
Keep three questions separate: Is the brand entering my market? Is this particular vehicle eligible for import? Who will support it after delivery? A positive answer to the first does not establish the other two.
Canada: check eligibility before paying a deposit
Transport Canada warns that most vehicles sold outside the United States and Mexico cannot be imported into Canada. Its guidance also explains that foreign-market certification cannot simply be converted into Canadian compliance through modifications. Specific exceptions exist. Check the exact vehicle and its documentation with Transport Canada and a licensed customs professional before payment or shipment. Source: Transport Canada’s import guidance.
This announcement should therefore not be read as an invitation to ship a China-market vehicle to Canada. Buyers in other countries should use their own destination’s rules, rather than applying Canada’s requirements to a different market.
Five questions to include in your enquiry
- Which exact version? Ask for the model year, trim, steering position, powertrain and intended sales market. Do not compare vehicles by model name alone.
- What proves import eligibility? Have your clearance adviser check the required certification, age limits, registration documents and destination requirements for that vehicle.
- Will charging and software work locally? For an EV or plug-in hybrid, confirm the charging connector, usable charging equipment, interface languages, maps, connectivity and account activation. Request a demonstration where possible.
- Who handles warranty and repairs? Obtain written answers on territorial warranty coverage, the responsible service provider, spare-parts sourcing and who pays for diagnosis or shipping. Do not assume a local dealer will support a separately imported vehicle.
- What does the quotation include? Request an itemised FOB quotation with a named port, then separately check freight, insurance, destination duties and taxes, clearance, registration and inspection costs. Keep confirmed figures separate from estimates.
A better starting point than “What is your lowest price?”
Tell us your destination country and port, intended use, preferred model and version, powertrain, and your local clearance contact if available. That gives a vehicle enquiry a practical starting point instead of comparing prices for an unverified route.
